Focal Species
Three Rivers is also interested in conserving lands outside our focus areas that support our focal species, Western Pond Turtle.
One of only two native turtle species in Oregon, the Western pond turtle is declining due to habitat loss, introduction of non-native predators, and poaching. It is listed on Oregon's Sensitive Species List as critical. Private landowners are key to the survival of Western pond turtles, because most of the best turtle habitat is privately owned. Western pond turtles need both slow moving ponds and streams where they feed and bask, as well as upland meadows and forest for nesting and hibernating.
